Self-Care Comes First

Updated: Jul 4, 2020

While so many of us are fighting every day to change the world, it can be easy to forget to take care of ourselves. To give the world our very best, we need to make sure we are feeling our best, and that's what self-care is all about. It may feel insensitive to tend to your mental health in times where showing up matters most, but to achieve long-term change and keep up our efforts, we need to be kind to ourselves first. You can't pour from an empty cup, so remember that sometimes it's okay to slow down and recharge so that you can bounce back stronger than ever and truly give the world your all. Below are a few simple (but highly effective) ways to take care of yourself.

Use social media intentionally and mindfully—Find the balance between staying informed and burning out. Set daily time limits for yourself and maybe hit the DND button for a few hours if you need to.

Practice stillness—Sometimes, you just need to take a deep breath, gather your thoughts, and process some emotions without the noise of the world seeping in. Use this time to find clarity and set intentions for yourself.

Connect with friends—Spend time with your loved ones and have real conversations about how you're feeling.

Give your mom a hug—now.

Take a nap—You deserve to rest

Listen to some Frank Ocean—or swim in the real ocean.

Talk to God

Eat some chocolate cake with pink frosting

Get lost in your art

Spend time in the sun

Take care of your community as well— Sometimes taking care of others is its own form of self-healing. Whether it's little acts of kindness or taking some time out of your week to volunteer with different organizations, making others feel good can positively impact our own mental health.

Love always,

Melania
