Mad Benefits: Turmeric

A crash course on the magic spice and why you should be using it in more than just your dinner + some DIY face masks for all your skincare needs.

@mcleodmanna

Because of its immense benefits on the mind and body, it's not surprising that turmeric has become increasingly popular over the last few years. The ancient root is known as an antioxidant with insaaaaane anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties. The lesser-known fact is that for turmeric to be effective, it must contain curcumin, which is a bioactive component found in the plant that gives turmeric its superpowers. Together, they create the ultimate duo for your mind, body, and beauty needs. Aside from adding it to your latte or smoothie, turmeric can be quite impressive when used in your beauty routine to clear up whatever skin issues you're having <3

For a glow

Turmeric is rich in antioxidants which fight free radicals (unstable atoms that can cause damage to cells and lead to illnesses and the aging process). Turmeric works to remove the free radicals that try to bind to the collagen and elastin on the skin, leaving you looking tighter and brighter.

Ingredients:

  • 2 tablespoons of flour

  • 1 teaspoon of turmeric

  • 3 tablespoons of yogurt

  • 2 drops of honey

Instructions:

  1. Mix flour, turmeric, honey, and milk

  2. Apply a thin layer to your face and let it sit for 20 minutes

  3. Gently rinse

  4. Apply your favorite moisturizer

Acne mask

Acting as a natural antiseptic and antibacterial, turmeric goes deep into the skin and works to soothe inflamed skin and calm the source, visibly reducing the acne in redness and size. Because of its intense properties, turmeric might be your best friend when it comes clearing up your skin or fading acne scars.

Ingredients:

  • Apple Cider Vinegar

  • 1/2 teaspoon of ground turmeric

  • 1 tablespoon of honey

Instructions:

  1. Apply ACV to a cotton ball and dab gently all over your skin and wait 5 minutes

  2. Mix the turmeric and honey and apply the mask to your face

  3. Leave it on for 25-20 minutes, then rinse with warm water

  4. If the turmeric leaves a tint on your skin, soak a cotton ball in milk and go over the stained area

  5. Repeat this twice a week <3
